很偶然的看到一份文件，美国国家石油战略研究报告，是美国能源部的官方文件。
结论是惊人，世界上最大的石油储备在美国和加拿大，其次在中国，这两个国家每一个都比中东大。
考虑到这些储备，全球至少几百年内不会有任何问题。

Canada--because of the oil sand. It is only profitable to extract oil from those sand if oil price is above $60. You are right, its proved reserve is as large as that of Saudi.
The caveat: huge amount of water is needed and huge pollution from processing.
Key: this oil is not cheap.
US--oil production on land reached its peak in 1968. But the whole offshore reserves (Atlantic and Pacific West) has never been touched. In 1950s, there was offshore exploration in Santa Monica, but the tech was not mature and a following oil leakage resulted in outrage from environmentalists. Congress passed a law and permanently banned the offshore exploration in US.
Onland reserves is depleting fast in US, but offshore reserve is promising for America.
The caveat: US gov needs to overcome the strong opposition of environmentalists, which is not easy. It needs a big crisis to change minds of those environmentalists.
Key: those offshore reserves will not be cheap to explore.
The cheapest oil reserves are in two regions in the world: mid-east (average cost below $5 per barrel) and the caspian sea.
Iraq reserve is the last and largest untapped CHEAP oil reserve in the world. US will deplete Arabians' reserve first before tapping its own offshore resource. It will keep on issuing useless greenbacks to rip off those stupid mid-easterners.

---USGS also generated some reserve reports, totally useless since it depends on the data provided by each nation. I know all data from those mid-east nations and Latin American ones are joke---therefore, do not put too much confidence in the DoE report.
The most trustworthy report is one that produced by the Cheney Energy study group. But Cheney refused to disclose it and up till now, only an exclusive group of top elites have seen that one. Cheney only released a few maps under the pressure from the Supreme Court.

It is sad that most Americans are so ignorant and still fail to see that.
