[香港汇丰银行协办]重庆快乐英语第四届英语口语大奖赛
Chongqing Happy English Fourth Spoken English Competition
[co-sponsored by HSBC BANK (Chongqing)]
(1:30pm, Oct. 28, 2007 [Sunday], 9th flr., Chongqing Book City @ JieFangBei)
Eligibility
Chongqing Happy English Level 7 Masters, foreign passport/green card holders and primary school children are not eligible.
Pre-screening
20 contestants will be selected from the applicants pre-screened. 5 stand-by contestants will also be selected just in case some of the contestants cannot participate.
The application forms are to be distributed at Happy English Corners from Sept. 1 to Oct. 20, and each applicant will be notified of the time and location of contestant screening sessions at JieFangBei & ShaPingBa by cellphone messages.
During the screening, John Peng and two native English speakers will have 2-3 minute casual talk with each applicant.
Up to 6 Direct Passes will be given to the applicants who impress the screening panel the most.
The 20 + 5 selected contestants will be notified no later than October 21. The contestant list will also be posted at www.cqhappyenglish.org
Competition procedure
No pre-prepared speeches. No pre-prepared list of questions. Instead, Q&A with judges only.
There will be 5-7 judges from US, Canada, UK, AUS and/or New Zealand. Each contestant will be assigned a judge randomly and the judge will ask the contestant whatever questions for about 5 minutes. Other judges may also ask questions.
The judges will then show their scores to the audience, but the highest and lowest scores will be ignored when calculating the average scores.
Scoring criteria
Emphasis will be on pronunciation and fluency. Grammar and proper word usage are secondary.
There will not be so much emphasis on vocabulary and contents so that high school students can compete with college students on the same stage.
RMB1000 Grand Prize for the luckiest spectator
The competition is open to all Chongqing Happy English Corners participants. Each participant [incl. contestants, but excl. judges] may guess who will be the top-10 of the competition. The guess closest to the final result will win RMB 1000 cash!!!
Dinner Party
All the judges, 20+5 contestants and the top-5 guessers above, are invited [which means totally free of charge] to a dinner right after the competition [location TBA].
While everyone is welcome to watch the competition at Chongqing Book City, the dinner is understandably by invitation only.
