P.S. What Should China Do About the Uighurs?

After Her Rise in China and Expulsion, a Uighur Becomes the Face of Her People

A little bit suprised that LA riots happened in China also. Sound that there is no effective way to channel out the racial tension in most of multi-racial countries worldwidely.

reverse discrimination

24.myz2008INJuly 6th, 20099:34 amwhen the government says 140 killed, it ususally means the innocent people who were killed by the rioters.

As a matter of fact, in china, policy wise, han people are discriminated. Have you heard of reverse discrimination? For example, suppose a college requires a Han student to have 500 points in entrance examinations to be qualified. For a student of minority, the requirement is 50 points, 100 points, even 200 points lower, depending on what the minority is.

Another example is the one-child policy. All Han couples are subject to this harsh policy. But minority groups are exempoted. They can have more children. The result is like in Xinjiang, the Han population is dwindling, but the Uyghur is swelling. Even idiots can foresee what will come.

Dillon H.Boston, MAJuly 6th, 20099:34 amMost commentators are Americans or Westerners who don't really understand China's present condition and don't care to find out the truth firsthand. It's this type of sanctimonious tone that the rest of the world despises. It's unfortunate that so few people care to understand China much less the rest of the world. There doesn't have to be a "clash of civilizations" if we only tried to understand one another rather then stereotyping about who the other nation is and what it represents. Details are not America's opus.

27.DavidNew YorkJuly 6th, 20099:34 am140 people killed, doubtlessly they were simply mowed down by the Chinese govt. Lets hope some video and images make it out of China.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

You should find at least some evidence for your "doubtless" claim. Otherwise you just made one of such rumors that cause extreme violence. What a shame.

davidChinaJuly 6th, 20099:34 amthis is the worst result of the reverse-discrimination ethnic policies practiced in Xinjiang. Han stared to rule XinJiang long before Jesus was born, when Uighurs were not even a word. They migrated to that area when Mongolian conquered China. Han people were genocided in that area by the Mongolians and the Uighurs, who then claimed the territory. Han people reclaimed that area about the time Columbus rediscovered America.Han people have the most complete and longest written history in the world. All these can be confirmed by the written archives of these time periods. The government is afraid of the Muslim world who regards Uighurs as their brothers.Han people are not allowed even to carry any knife but Uighurs can and are not hesitant to use against Han people.I am really frustrated by the government dealing with the Uighurs. Law and order are sacrificed for the appeasement.

34.JosephJohannesburg, South AfricaJuly 6th, 200910:31 amI Just couldn't understand the "Bizarre" statements by some American readers. How could possibly compare this incident to the Iran protests? Those are the innocent lives lost due to those rioters. If you are not happy with the communist government or whatever, you can target them, why kill those innocents. How about the 9/11, those Muslims were not happy with the US government, but killed innocent Americans instead. This is really hypocrisy.

38.HaTaiwanJuly 6th, 200910:31 amIslamists who kill Americans = terrorists, Islamists who kill Chinese = oppressed people. This is a ridiculous article.

It is about those who seek to separate Xinjiang from China through means of terrorism. The NYTimes is politically incorrect to equate Han with "Chinese." To draw an analogy, there is no such thing as "the ongoing migration to Xinjiang by the Chinese" just as there is no such thing as "the ongoing migration to California by Americans." To confuse these basic facts as recognized by all member nations of the United Nations and too many legitimate world organizations to name is a disservice by the NYTimes to its readers. Please, check your facts and stand on the right side of the facts before you begin painting in broad strokes.

In America, a couple of looters in the wake of the Katrina were shot to death. Nobody blamed Uncle Sam for violating human rights.

Two factors are at work. China has never been a society that is ruled by law. In traditional China, people were not equal before law. Certain groups enjoyed privileges. Today’s Uyghurs enjoyed privileges in many aspects, although some were denied their dream of seeking independence. Besides, there was a very outdated mentality, which can be summarized by a Chinese saying, “law does not apply to a large crowd.” Second, as a government that has insufficient legitimacy, Beijing tends to be weak in the initiate stage of crises. This was true in 1989, and this is true now. In a democratic country, all trouble-makers should be dealt with quickly and effectively.

The grievances that caused the clash are legitimate
