Darned if they do and darned if they don't (USB email won't let me say it the correct way!)....the ECB looks to be in a catch 22 as far as their currency goes. If they cut interest rates on Thursday more than expected, they signal to the market that the economy is worse than expected. If they cut at or less than expected, they are going to seen as in denial. Either way....looks as if the EUR is poised to go lower. Greece was downgraded by S&P last night, Ireland is rumored to need some help from the IMF (but this is just a rumor and denied by Ireland), and to add to the negativity, Deutsche Bank posted a 4.8B Q4 loss.
Up north, the CAD is seeing some test to the topside and trading on the high end of the day. Toronto based Nortel Networks Corp., the largest telephone equipment maker in North America, filed for bankruptcy protection today and the Lonnie is being sold off as a consequence. Not to mention, the trade surplus for Canada decreased to the lowest level in 11 years.
Speaking of trade data, the numbers of trade flow amongst nations look bad. There was an article on the UK telegraph that a broker out of Singapore stated that the shipping rates are zero now and trade has fallen off a cliff. Of course, the rates are not zero but I believe that he means profitability is zero and negative on some shipments. Apparently, the Baltic dry Index which measures freight rates for bulk commodities fell hard a few months back while the market for the shipping of finished industrial goods is taking it in the chin now.

上周在美国飞机上遇到一位五大三粗的白男乘务长，一闲下来，就打毛衣！14小时下来，我看他已打好了一个袖管。 
好佩服。 看来经济萧条之际，都得多学一技之长。
