The Polymer Scientist will be responsible for conducting both fundamental and applied research into polyolefin-based polymer systems with the goal of developing new and novel products for a wide range of different market segments.
The position will report to the Product Fundamentals Manager within the larger Global Chemical Research organization and will be located in Baytown, TX. Domestic travel with some limited amount of international travel will be expected to meet the positions responsibilities.
The Polymer Scientist will conduct research in larger cross-functional and geographically dispersed teams including working with external 3rd parties. Therefore, the candidate must have strong interpersonal skills.
Primary Job Functions:
The position will be responsible initially for, but not necessarily limited to the following activities:
• Conducting mechanical characterization of semi-crystalline and elastomeric polyolefins as well as polyolefin blends and composites in support of fundamental and applied research programs.
• Conducting structural characterization of semi-crystalline and elastomeric polyolefins as well as polyolefin blends and composites in support of fundamental and applied research programs.
• Understand effect of polymer processing on solid state structure development and how it correlates to final mechanical properties
• Providing guidance on mechanics and structural characterization of polyolefins to the broader organization
• Providing work direction to one or possibly more research technicians
• Providing training, mentoring and skill / technique development for the research technician
• Oversee all safety / health / environmental requirements and ensure compliance
• Appropriately document work activities
Job Requirements:
• Ph.D. in Polymer Physics, Chemistry, Science or Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or related physical sciences degree
• Demonstrated work experience and publication record in the area of mechanical testing and structural characterization of polyolefins
• Demonstrated ability to work with multiple groups and participate on multi-functional teams that will require some domestic and limited international travel
• Proficient in use of computers and possess excellent administrative and organizational skills
• Strong analytical and communication skills.
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Detailed knowledge of the physics and thermodynamics of polyolefin based polymers
• Hands on experience in mechanical testing - tensile, compression, scratch, indentation, fracture, creep - and familiarity with test procedures and equipment vendors
• Experience in collecting and analyzing scattering data
• Strong background in experimental design and quality control methods
• Experience in high throughput experimentation and equipment design and modification
