1. Summary Role Description
The Application Architect is accountable for the quality and cohesion of application architecture components within a domain, their conformance to approved standards, and alignment with target (future-state) enterprise and domain architecture goals. This includes management of domain specific application architecture initiatives both in terms of evolving the architecture and ensuring compliance to GM architectural standards. Looks across the applications used to support the domain to ensure that the architecture of these applications supports the business vision and goals while remaining in compliance with GM standards. Ensures appropriate and effective data integration across the applications within the domain and works to ensure adequate integration across domains where appropriate. The application architect is responsible for ensuring that specific solutions conform to the approved architectural direction of the domain. The application architect shows leadership in assisting other project architects from either AD (application development) or ADS (application development and sustain) suppliers to architect solutions in accordance with approved domain architectural direction.
2. Education
Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline required. Master's degree (technical discipline) preferred.
3. Major Duties and Responsibilities
a. Responsible for actively managing the evaluation, selection, and application of architecture components to create an integrated portfolio of domain-specific applications which deliver maximum business value in line with enterprise strategy and standards.
b. Responsible for definition and documentation of the current state application architecture in an organized and cohesive manner using industry accepted frameworks.
c. Responsible for development and documentation of future state application architecture based on domain-specific business direction, requirements and anticipated capabilities.
d. Reviews, evaluates and actively contributes to domain solutions from an application architecture perspective. The application architect conducts these reviews in a timely manner in order to support project timing requirements while balancing the need for architectural conformance with business needs. The application architect assists, consults and otherwise insures that the project architects design/architect within domain guidelines to meet their project requirements.
e. Responsible for developing and communicating an application architecture roadmap illustrating the necessary transition architectures and portfolio activity required to bridge from the current state to the defined future state.
f. Responsible for communicating domain architecture principles to solution (project) architects providing guidance and mentoring to affect project conformance to those principles, and evaluating solution architectures for conformance to principles and standards.
g. Responsible for integration and cohesion of inter-domain application architecture components.
h. Responsible for the scalability, maintainability, reliability, extensibility and usability of the end solution designs.
i. Responsible for communicating domain application architecture requirements with enterprise-wide applicability to the enterprise.
j. Responsible for providing on-demand expertise to project rescue missions or production system incidents where application architecture is indicated as a potential root cause for the issue at hand.
k. Responsible for applying relevant enterprise and domain information technology architecture components and standards (business, application, information, technology and security) to a specific technology solution (project).
l. Responsible for packaging and publishing reusable architecture building blocks to enterprise architecture repository.
m. Contributes to the development of domain specific architectural roadmaps considering the requirements and needs of various solution components.
n. Success in this role will be measured by the demonstrated ability to drive innovation and business transformation through development and implementation of information technology solutions that utilize GM specified standards and industry accepted best practices to create or augment GM's competitive advantage.
o. Success in this role will also be measured by demonstrated ability to drive business value and technical innovation through selection and implementation of industry leading application architecture technologies while conforming to GM architectural standards and policies.
4. Qualifications
Architecture Skills:
a. Broad experience based understanding of the principles of application architecture, including the distinction between contextual, conceptual, logical, and physical layers and the distinction and dependencies between business, information, systems, and technology.
b. Proven experience based ability to define and implement effective application architectures in large-scale multi-national organizations.
c. Ability to evaluate applications architectures to ensure appropriate use of technology components and standards while ensuring that the solution design provides adequate scalability, robustness, fault tolerance and redundancy, capacity and maintainability.
d. Ability to illustrate abstract models using concrete examples, and create views into architecture that reflect the viewpoint of different consumers of that architecture.
e. Ability to conduct fact-based evaluations of architecture alternatives, mediate opposing viewpoints and negotiate equitable outcomes that ensure stable solutions.
f. Practical experience with enterprise architecture support tools (e.g., Orbus, Troux, System Architect) or MS-Office toolset (Visio, Excel, Word) as applied to application architecture deliverables.
g. Practical application of TOGAF or equivalent framework/method in establishing, governing, and executing domain-level application architecture work.
Technical Skills:
a. Ability to apply a broad understanding of industry accepted information technologies - including application development technology, database technology, infrastructure technology - to architecture development and decision making processes concerning their introduction, use, and retirement within a domain.
b. Ability to comprehend, evaluate, and select from application architecture alternatives against principles, policy, risk, and cost, and communicate the decision, the rationale behind the decision, and the implications of the decision to both enterprise and projects.
c. Ability to identify and appropriately apply current information technologies across multiple projects and platforms driving business focused results.
d. Proven experience based ability to technically evaluate, assess and recommend remediation of technical application architectures and applications in a crisis management situation. Proven ability to diagnose and remediate large scale multi-tiered application systems, including the underlying infrastructure is essential.
e. Understands and can apply software engineering and application development methodologies in a complex multi-project environment.
5. Experience
a. Minimum 10 years experience in information systems architecture development and deployment.
b. Demonstrated hands-on experience with successful development and deployment of cross-system or domain level application architectures using current information technology frameworks, standards and practices.
c. Demonstrated experience in successfully translating business strategy, objectives, and future-state capabilities into application architecture requirements while maintaining traceability between them through deployment and benefits realization.
d. Career track record of engineering, developing (coding), deploying, and maintaining business critical systems across a range of technologies and using a range of development patterns, methods, and languages including a minimum of 5 years of hands-on coding and development experience.
e. Demonstrated experience in developing contextual and conceptual architecture deliverables at a domain level - not just technical solution architecture deliverables.
f. Demonstrated experience in successfully engaging IT leadership in defining and elaborating application architecture requirements.
g. Experience engineering and delivering systems in at least one of the following business domain areas: supply chain and logistics, automotive product engineering, automotive manufacturing and assembly, automotive sales and service, finance management, HR or corporate staffs.
